Sign the petition to fully fund public schools

No matter what we look like or where we live, most of us want similar things for our children. We want them to grow up safe, supported and loved. We want them to attend welcoming schools that prepare them for success after high school.
Unfortunately, the wealthiest few and the lawmakers who do their bidding have used budget deficits to make that more difficult by exacerbating inequities in our schools. In 2010, they cut or delayed state education aid instead of addressing the real issue – decades of chronic underfunding.

School board resolution to fully fund public education

We’re asking locals to persuade their school board members to pass resolutions supporting raising the revenue necessary to pay for the services our students need. That includes more mental health services, smaller class sizes, creating schools all students feel welcome in, increased broadband for students and communities, addressing disruptions caused by COVID-19 and more.
School boards have tremendous influence over state legislators. Passing a resolution will put an enormous amount of pressure on lawmakers to do the right thing and increase funding for public education.

2021 legislative agenda

COVID-19 is the flashlight illuminating the inequities within our schools and broader communities. We already knew they existed.
COVID-19 is not just about learning loss. There is collective trauma around losing loved ones to the virus and the economic strife families endured. New examples of racial injustice in our criminal justice system and the dog-whistle rhetoric in the presidential campaign during the pandemic have only made the trauma worse. Read more.

Minnesota’s system of care and education for our youngest children is in urgent need of dramatic overhaul.
Our educational system yields deeply inequitable outcomes. And child care is vastly underfunded, relying on workers earning poverty-level wages and that doesn’t have nearly enough capacity to meet the needs of Minnesota’s families. Read more.

Education support professionals (ESPs) hold our schools together.
Everyone who works in public education deserves the same things. Respect for their contribution to the care and education of our students. Fair compensation for their work, including affordable health care. Safe working conditions. Read more.

Creating more just and inclusive schools
No matter our differences, most of us want similar things for our children. We want them to grow up safe, supported and loved. We want them to attend joyful, welcoming schools that prepare them for success after high school. And we all want a voice in how our kids are taught.
Unfortunately, public schools in Minnesota are not meeting the needs of many students, particularly students of color, students living in poverty and students struggling with past traumas. Educators are unhappy, too. There are educator shortages everywhere, particularly for teachers of color. Decades of chronic underfunding created this crisis.
If we want all students to thrive and succeed, Minnesota must build culturally responsive schools that reflect the diverse students they serve. Read more.

We all want to advance solutions to help students — no matter what they look like, where they live or how much money their parents make — thrive and lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
Unfortunately, the wealthiest few and their backers are using Minnesota’s gross racial disparities and opportunity gaps to push more standardized testing, narrowing curriculum and privatizing our public schools. And these strategies do nothing to improve educational outcomes for our students. Read more.

Minnesota’s shortage of practicing and prospective teachers is real – and it will only get worse if the Legislature fails to respond with policies that attract and retain more educators, particularly teachers of color.
In 2017, the Legislature used this very real teacher shortage it created as a pretext to ram through an overhaul of the teacher licensure system that corporate-backed groups had wanted for years.
Let’s improve the Tiered Licensure Law so it can both honor teacher preparation and recognize different pathways into teaching, while allowing districts to use the system as a vehicle to elevate teachers, support them through their career and keep them in the classroom. Read more.

Protect the freedom to negotiate
Educators care about more than their compensation. They want more control over the learning environments in their worksites and the future of their profession. It’s time for state law to reflect it. Read more.
